NetApp ONTAP (Cluster) storage monitoring
Site24x7 helps you monitor disk utilization in your NetApp ONTAP (Cluster) storage systems. This allows you to stay on top of capacity usage, receive timely alerts, and plan for storage expansion before hitting critical thresholds.
Use cases
Use case 1: Proactive capacity planning in a growing enterprise
Scenario:
A global e-commerce company relies on NetApp ONTAP (Cluster) devices to store product catalogs, user data, and transactional records. During seasonal sales, data inflow spikes, leading to rapid disk consumption.
Challenge:
Without real-time visibility, the IT team risks running into storage limits, causing application slowdowns or outages.
How Site24x7 helps:
By monitoring disk utilization continuously, Site24x7 alerts the team when usage crosses 80%, allowing the team to proactively expand storage or archive older data, ensuring smooth operations during peak traffic.
Use case 2: Avoiding storage-related outages in a healthcare environment
Scenario:
A healthcare organization stores medical records and imaging data on NetApp ONTAP (Cluster) storage systems. These files are large, and regulatory requirements prevent immediate deletion.
Challenge:
A sudden surge in disk usage—such as from high-resolution imaging—could silently consume available space, putting critical systems like EMRs at risk of downtime.
How Site24x7 helps:
With automated alerts and historical usage trends, the IT administrator is notified when disk usage approaches a critical threshold. The team can then move non-urgent data to secondary storage, ensuring compliance and uninterrupted access to patient information.
How it works
Site24x7 monitors NetApp ONTAP (Cluster) storage devices using a secure, agentless polling mechanism via the NetApp REST API.
Here's a step-by-step breakdown of how it works:
- The Site24x7 On-Premise Poller, installed within the network's firewall, connects to the NetApp ONTAP (Cluster).
- At regular intervals, the On-Premise Poller connects to the NetApp ONTAP (Cluster) storage device's management logical interface (LIF) over HTTPS from port 443.
- The On-Premise Poller uses the provided API credentials to authenticate with the NetApp ONTAP (Cluster).
- Once authenticated, it sends REST API calls to collect disk-related metrics.
- The On-Premise Poller processes the collected metrics.
- Processed data is securely transmitted to the Site24x7 application using encrypted channels.
- Once the data reaches Site24x7, it is displayed for the respective monitor.
- Alerts are triggered based on thresholds.
- Usage trends are stored for historical analysis and capacity forecasting.
Prerequisites
- The NetApp ONTAP (Cluster) storage should be accessible from the required On-Premise Poller through ICMP ping and HTTPS.
- Make sure that the On-Premise Poller version is 6.4.2 or above. Upgrade the On-Premise Poller if necessary.
- Both the On-Premise Poller and the Network Module should be up and running.
- NetApp API credentials should be available.
Credentials for storage monitoring
Before adding a monitor, you need to save the credentials that will be used for collecting the metrics from theNetApp ONTAP (Cluster) storage device.
Credentials are encrypted and stored by Site24x7 to ensure they are secure.
Adding a monitor
Start monitoring your NetApp ONTAP (Cluster) storage by adding it as a monitor.
Performance metrics
Tracking the metrics for a NetApp ONTAP (Cluster) storage device helps you identify when your disks are nearing capacity and take proactive steps to avoid service disruption or performance degradation.

Threshold and availability profiles
After adding a NetApp ONTAP (Cluster) storage monitor to your Site24x7 account, you can create a threshold and availability profile and configure conditions for different metrics for the alarms engine to determine if the monitor has to be declared critical or in trouble. Configure thresholds for each disk in the cluster for more customization.
