How to Monitor Elastic Volume Service in Huawei Cloud
Site24x7 offers monitoring support for Huawei Cloud's Elastic Volume Service (EVS). Monitors EVS disk throughput, IOPS, latency, and queue depth in real time, providing storage and application teams with early notice of I/O bottlenecks.
Use cases
Prevent disk saturation: A proactive alert indicating an increasing disk queue length trend, allowing the storage team to either resize the volume or redistribute the workload before I/O saturation leads to application timeouts.
Align capacity tiers: Sustained high I/O utilization on a SATA volume alerts engineers that the workload has outgrown the storage tier, prompting a planned migration to an ultra-high I/O SSD without emergency downtime.
Setup and configuration
EVS resources are auto-discovered and monitored during the Huawei Cloud integration. To enable monitoring, follow these steps:
- Navigate to Cloud > Huawei > Add Huawei Monitor. Learn how to add a Huawei Cloud monitor.
- While adding or editing a Huawei Cloud monitor, select EVS from the Service/Resource Types drop-down menu and click Save.
- Go to Cloud > Huawei. Then, select the created Huawei monitor.
- Click EVS to view the performance metrics.
Supported metrics
Throughput
Metric name |
Description |
Units |
| Disk Read Throughput | The rate at which data is being read from the disk volume. | Bytes/second |
| Disk Write Throughput | The rate at which data is being written to the disk volume. | Bytes/second |
| Disk Read Bytes Per Operation | The average number of bytes transferred per read operation, indicating read block size. | Bytes |
IOPS
Metric name |
Description |
Units |
| Disk Read Request Rate | The number of read I/O operations being performed per second. | Count/second |
| Disk Write Request Rate | The number of write I/O operations being performed per second. | Count/second |
| Disk Read Bytes Per Operation | The average number of bytes transferred per read operation, indicating read block size. | Bytes |
Latency
Metric name |
Description |
Units |
| Disk Read Await Time | The average time from when a read request is issued to when it is completed, including queuing time. | Milliseconds |
| Disk Write Await Time | The average time from when a write request is issued to when it is completed, including queuing time. | Milliseconds |
Queue
Metric name |
Description |
Units |
| Disk Queue Length | The average number of I/O requests waiting in the disk queue at any given time. | Count |
Utilization
Metric name |
Description |
Units |
| Disk I/O Utilization | The percentage of time during which the disk was busy handling I/O requests. | Percentage |
Threshold configuration
You can configure thresholds and alerts for all EVS metrics to proactively detect performance degradation or connection issues.
- Go to Admin > Configuration Profiles > Threshold and Availability.
- Create or edit your Threshold Profile for EVS.
- Assign the profile to the respective monitors to trigger alerts.
IT Automation
Use Site24x7's IT Automation to resolve common issues with EVS performance:
- Go to Admin > IT Automation Templates. Then, click Add Automation Templates.
- Create an automation rule by selecting the automation Type (e.g., Server reboot, clear queue).
- Map the created rules to the EVS, for automatic execution during alerts.
Configuration rules
Use Configuration Rules to simplify bulk setup across EVS instances. Automatically assign Threshold Profiles, Notification Profiles, Tags, and Monitor Groups when new monitors are discovered.
