Oracle NoSQL Database monitoring

Oracle NoSQL Database is a fully managed, serverless database service that delivers low latency, high availability, and automatic scalability for modern cloud native applications. It supports key value, JSON, and fixed schema data models, making it suitable for workloads such as user profiles, IoT data ingestion, session management, gaming, and real-time analytics.

Site24x7's integration with Oracle NoSQL Database enables you to monitor the health, performance, and capacity of your database tables from a single console. It provides visibility into read and write capacity consumption, storage growth, throttling events, shard utilization, and replication performance, helping you quickly identify performance bottlenecks and maintain application availability.

This integration provides monitoring support for the following monitor types:

  • NoSQL Table: Monitors top-level Oracle NoSQL tables and tracks capacity consumption, storage utilization, throttling activity, shard utilization, and replication health.
  • NoSQL Child Table: Monitors child tables within a parent table and provides table specific performance and capacity metrics.

Overview

Oracle NoSQL monitoring in Site24x7 provides continuous visibility into the operational health and performance of your NoSQL database environment. It collects metrics from the OCI monitoring service and presents them through dashboards, reports, alerts, and trend charts.

By monitoring database activity, administrators can:

  • Track read and write capacity consumption.
  • Monitor storage growth across database tables.
  • Detect read, write, and storage throttling before they affect applications.
  • Identify uneven shard utilization that may impact performance.
  • Monitor replication lag between regions for Global Active tables.
  • Forecast capacity growth and optimize database provisioning.

With proactive monitoring, operations teams can detect issues early, reduce application downtime, and maintain consistent database performance.

Benefits of Site24x27's OCI NoSQL integration

Site24x7's integration with Oracle NoSQL Database provides the following benefits:

  • Monitor read and write capacity consumption in real time.
  • Track storage growth across database tables.
  • Detect read, write, and storage throttling events before users are affected.
  • Monitor maximum shard utilization to identify data distribution imbalances.
  • Track replica lag for Global Active tables and validate cross region replication performance.
  • Configure thresholds and receive alerts when critical metrics exceed acceptable limits.
  • Forecast future capacity requirements using historical usage trends.
  • Organize database resources using monitor groups for simplified operations.
  • View all Oracle NoSQL resources from a centralized monitoring console.

Use cases

Here are a few use cases for Oracle NoSQL Database monitoring.

Preventing application slowdowns caused by throttling

An online retail application stores customer sessions and shopping cart information in Oracle NoSQL Database. During seasonal traffic spikes, read requests increase significantly, causing read throttling on several tables. Site24x7 detects the increase in read throttle count and read units, allowing administrators to increase provisioned capacity before customers experience slower response times.

Monitoring storage growth for capacity planning

A financial services organization stores transaction records in Oracle NoSQL Database. Over several months, storage usage steadily increases as new transaction data is added. Using capacity planning in Site24x7, administrators forecast future storage requirements and expand database capacity before storage limits impact application performance.

Tracking replication health across regions

A global SaaS provider uses Global Active tables to replicate customer data between OCI regions for disaster recovery. Site24x7 monitors replica lag and immediately alerts administrators when replication delays increase because of network congestion. The operations team resolves the issue before recovery objectives are affected.

Setup and configuration

To get started with Oracle NoSQL Database monitoring:

  • Site24x7 uses cross-tenancy access to monitor your resources using Site24x7's tenancy user. Log in to your Site24x7 account and create a specific policy to allow Site24x7 to view your resources without affecting your security.
  • On the Integrate OCI Monitor page, select NoSQL Database from the Services to be discovered list.

Permissions

Ensure that Site24x7 receives the following permissions to monitor the NoSQL Database:

  • Read nosql-tables
  • Read nosql-rows

Polling frequency

Site24x7 queries OCI service-level APIs according to the set polling frequency (from once a minute to once a day) to collect metrics from a NoSQL Database monitor.

Supported metrics

The supported metrics for Oracle NoSQL Database monitors are provided below.

Oracle NoSQL Table

Metric name Description Statistics Unit
Read Units Number of read units consumed during the selected time period. Sum Count
Write Units Number of write units consumed during the selected time period. Sum Count
Storage GB Maximum storage consumed by the table. Storage values are updated hourly, so intermediate values may reflect the latest available measurement. Maximum GB

Max Shard Size Usage % Highest percentage of storage utilized by any shard in the table compared to its allocated capacity. Maximum Percent
Replica Lag Time delay between data updates in the source region and replication to the destination region for Global Active tables. Average Millisecond

Oracle NoSQL Child Table

Metric name Description Statistics Unit
Read Units Number of read units consumed during the selected time period. Sum Count
Write Units Number of write units consumed during the selected time period. Sum Count
Storage GB Maximum storage consumed by the child table. Maximum GB
Read Throttle Count Number of read requests that were throttled during the selected time period. Sum Count

Threshold configuration

To configure thresholds for an Oracle NoSQL Database monitor:

  1. Log in to your Site24x7 account and navigate to Admin > Configuration Profiles > Threshold and Availability.
  2. Click Add Threshold Profile.
  3. Select OCI NoSQL Table or OCI NoSQL Child Table from the Monitor Type drop-down menu.
  4. Configure threshold values for the supported metrics based on your operational requirements.
  5. Click Save.

Status propagation

Status propagation simplifies alert management by consolidating alerts across related Oracle NoSQL Database resources. Instead of generating separate alerts for parent and child tables, Site24x7 automatically propagates the health status of child tables to their associated parent monitor.

When status propagation is enabled:

  • Alerts for Oracle NoSQL Child Table monitors are disabled by default.
  • Health status changes detected in child tables are propagated to the parent Oracle NoSQL Table monitor.
  • A single alert is generated for the parent monitor, helping reduce duplicate notifications and alert fatigue.
  • If you want child tables to generate independent alerts, edit the associated threshold profile and set Skip Alert to No.

For example, if a child table experiences excessive write throttling, Site24x7 updates the health status of the parent Oracle NoSQL Table monitor and raises a single alert. This allows administrators to focus on the overall health of the database instead of responding to multiple alerts for related resources.

Organize Oracle NoSQL using monitor groups

Monitor groups help you organize Oracle NoSQL resources based on applications, business units, environments, or cloud regions. Grouping related NoSQL tables allows administrators to monitor the health of an entire application from a single dashboard.

For example, an e-commerce application may consist of customer, inventory, order, and payment tables. Adding these monitors to the same monitor group enables administrators to quickly identify whether performance issues are isolated to a single table or affecting the complete application workflow.

Monitor groups also simplify alert management by allowing notification profiles, user permissions, and dashboards to be configured at the group level.

Plan database growth with capacity planning

Capacity planning in Site24x7 helps you analyze historical database utilization trends and forecast future resource requirements for Oracle NoSQL Database.

By monitoring metrics such as Read Units, Write Units, Storage GB, and Max Shard Size Usage %, you can identify workload growth patterns and estimate when database resources may approach operational limits.

For example, if a production table consistently shows increasing storage consumption over several months, capacity planning can predict when the table may require additional capacity or a different provisioning strategy. This enables administrators to scale resources proactively, minimize throttling, and avoid unexpected performance degradation during periods of increased demand.

Licensing

Each Oracle NoSQL Database component consumes monitor licenses as follows:

Viewing Oracle NoSQL Database data
