OCI Dedicated Virtual Machine Host monitoring

OCI Dedicated Virtual Machine Hosts provide dedicated physical server capacity for Compute instances. Monitoring these hosts helps you understand resource utilization, available capacity, and the performance of instances placed on each host.

Site24x7 integrates with OCI Dedicated VM Hosts to provide visibility into host capacity and hosted instance performance. The integration monitors OCPU and memory capacity, resource utilization, instance counts, and performance metrics for the Compute instances associated with each host.

Overview

With Site24x7's OCI Dedicated VM Host integration, you can monitor the following:

  • Host capacity: Track total, used, and remaining OCPUs and memory, along with OCPU and memory utilization.
  • Hosted instances: Monitor the number of instances placed on the host, including running and stopped instances.
  • Instance performance: Track CPU and memory utilization, network traffic, disk throughput, disk IOPS, and load average for hosted instances.
  • Host status: Monitor failed and ongoing update states.

Instances launched on a Dedicated VM Host are regular OCI Compute instances. The dedicatedVmHostId field identifies instances placed on a dedicated host. Site24x7 uses the relationship between the host and its instances to associate instance performance metrics with the relevant host monitor.

Use case

An organization runs business-critical workloads on OCI Dedicated VM Hosts to keep compute resources isolated on dedicated physical infrastructure. As workloads grow, administrators need to determine whether a host has enough OCPUs and memory to accommodate additional instances and whether existing instances are experiencing resource constraints.

With Site24x7, administrators can monitor remaining host capacity alongside CPU and memory utilization across hosted instances. Disk activity, network traffic, and IOPS metrics provide additional visibility into workload performance. Instance counts also help administrators understand how resources are distributed across hosts.

Monitoring host status and configuring thresholds for supported metrics helps teams identify capacity constraints and investigate potential performance issues before they affect workloads.

Benefits of OCI Dedicated VM Host integration

Site24x7's OCI Dedicated VM Host integration provides the following benefits:

  • Host capacity monitoring: Track total, used, and remaining OCPUs and memory to understand available capacity.
  • Resource utilization monitoring: Monitor OCPU and memory utilization to identify hosts approaching capacity.
  • Instance placement visibility: Track the number of instances placed on each host, including running and stopped instances.
  • Instance performance monitoring: Monitor CPU, memory, network, disk activity, IOPS, and load average for hosted instances.
  • Proactive alerting: Configure thresholds for supported metrics and receive alerts when monitored values require attention.
  • Centralized monitoring: View host capacity and hosted instance performance from the Site24x7 console.

Custom metrics and status alerts

Custom metrics provide additional visibility into host capacity, resource utilization, instance counts, and host status.

Configure toggle-type thresholds for the following options to receive alerts when the corresponding state is reported:

  • Notify When Dedicated VM Host Is in Failed Status: Enable this option to identify when the dedicated host enters a failed state.
  • Notify When Dedicated VM Host Is in Updating Status: Enable this option to identify when an update operation is in progress.

Capacity planning

Capacity planning is available for Dedicated VM Host monitors and helps you understand how dedicated host resources are being consumed over time. Use the total, used, and remaining OCPU and memory metrics, along with OCPU and memory utilization, to identify sustained increases in capacity consumption. Reviewing these trends can help you determine whether a host can accommodate additional instances and plan for additional dedicated hosts before capacity runs out.

Capacity planning can also help you compare resource usage across monitored dedicated hosts and identify hosts that consistently operate at higher utilization. Combined with the placed instance, running instance, and hosted instance performance metrics, this gives you better visibility into how workloads are distributed across your dedicated hosts and how your capacity requirements may grow based on historical monitoring data.

You can also use metric forecasting to project future OCPU and memory requirements for your dedicated hosts.

Monitor Groups

Monitor groups can also be used to view the overall status of related OCI Dedicated VM Host monitors and streamline day-to-day monitoring. You can add or remove monitors from groups as your compute environment changes.

For example, you can create separate monitor groups for dedicated hosts in different availability domains or fault domains, or group a dedicated host with the Compute Instance monitors placed on it for a particular application. This makes it easier to identify issues affecting a specific environment or application without reviewing individual monitors separately.

You can organize your OCI Dedicated VM Host monitors into monitor groups based on your application, environment, business unit, region, or other operational requirements. Grouping related monitors provides a consolidated view of their availability and performance from a single location. You can also use tag-based monitoring to automatically organize monitors into groups using native Oracle tags.
