Once you register your website in Site24x7, the hosted service periodically checks if your website is accessible or not. When it is not accessible, notifications are sent and corrective actions can be triggered.

As per CIO, hackers changed the DNS Server records to point to alternate servers and hence Comcast.net users were unable to check their mails.
